DEIA

"Diversity is being invited to the party. Inclusion is being asked to dance."

ALAMN’s focus on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA) aligns with that of the National Chapter of ALA.  Therefore, ALAMN has adopted the Diversity Statement of ALA as updated June of 2022.

We want you to see and feel our commitment to diversity in everything we do.

One of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee’s goals is to provide our members with resources and educational opportunities to enhance diversity within our firms and organizations.  Below is not intended to be a complete list of resources, but includes many of our favorites.  If you have suggestions to add to the list, ideas on how we can serve you better, or if you would like to join the committee, please contact Katherine Hubbard.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Accessibility Team

ALAMN and its DEI&A Team are dedicated to providing a valuable educational and development opportunity to Minnesota metro area students of diverse backgrounds who are interested in pursuing a career which can be utilized in a law firm. The goal is to help students learn about different careers and help them analyze and investigate the profession that best suits their interests and career goals in the legal profession.

We continue our commitment to investing in the future of Minnesota’s legal administrative profession through learning and scholarships. Every year, the ALAMN together with the DEI&A Team awards a $2,000 Diversity Scholarship to a hard-working, with strong academics, and well accomplished Minnesota high school student of a diverse background pursuing a career in legal administration or a related field.

Additionally, a Career Fair is held every year that features professionals from law firms across the Twin Cities representing a wide array of fields in the legal industry. This event is a great opportunity for high school students to learn about the different career options available in law firms and hear and learn first-hand knowledge from the professionals themselves.

We hope to build on these initiatives and continue to expand our efforts well into the future to grow the association’s diverse members, invest in the future generation of legal administrative professionals, and strengthen our scholarship and diversity training programs to keep providing education opportunities that promote awareness of diversity and inclusion.

Deniyah Brown

The DEIA Committee of the ALAMN is pleased to announce our 2023 Diversity Scholarship winner is Deniyah Brown.

This scholarship is intended for a Minnesota metro area student of a diverse background who is planning to pursue a career which can be utilized in a law firm, such as business administration, marketing, human resources, finance, accounting, paralegal or attorney.

Deniya is a senior attending Lakeville North High school and is going to college this fall to study business administration and hopes to one day find a marketing position in the legal industry.  Deniyah will be the first person in her family to attend college.   Her recommendation letter from one of her high school teachers beams that Deniyah’s “leadership ability, communication skills, and strong academic foundation make her an excellent asset . . “ Deniyah wants to show her younger siblings that “whatever they have a passion for . . . they can do.”

We are thrilled to support diverse students such as Deniyah, in advancing their education and career opportunities.  We hope to one day have her working with one of us!

 EVENTS:

ALAMN DEIA Virtual Career Fair with Metro State University

Toward the goal of continued improvements in the diversification of our legal industry workforce, on January 23, 2024, ALAMN members Bernie Theis, Zhakalasky Carrion, Rebecca Doyle and Joey Monson spoke at a virtual presentation to Professor Loi Nguyen’s Metro State University students.  The speakers provided information on their real-life legal career paths, the various components of compensation, and tried and true salary negotiation tips   The Metro State students were engaging and submitted inquisitive questions which the speakers responded to during the Q&A session at the end of their presentation.  The ALAMN DEIA Team extends a hearty thank you to each of our speakers and a huge shout out to Bernie Theis for being the catalyst behind this successful maiden voyage into ALAMN DEIA Team’s virtual career presentation.  The DEIA Team plans on doing several more virtual presentations in 2024 to college and, potentially, high school students.
